Caladium

from €12.00

Caladium is a genus of plants in the Arum family (Araceae). Caladium species are endemic to Central and South America, where they flourish in tropical climates.‍ ‍The leaves grow up to 20 cm tall and can become so heavy that the long petioles fall off. The slender stems grow directly from a subterranean tuber. The shoot tuber functions as a survival organ. These houseplants rarely flower at all.

Typically during the winter, all of the leaves die, and only the tuber survives, allowing it to regrow leaves the next year. The perennial herbaceous plant typically grows to around 60 cm tall. In nature, the caladium produces a cob bloom that is surrounded by bracts. It pales in comparison to the patterned leaves.
